The awards race is tightening up with many pundits making their predictions this week. With only three or four films left yet to screen for critics - most notably Steven Spileberg's "Munich" and Terrence Malick's "The New World", its surprising how much consensus there seems to be amongst the community of predictors as to who'll win the prize everyone wants - a Best Film Oscar.
With the help of Oscar Watch (run by the the brilliant Sasha Stone, a woman with great relatives and personal taste in film) the following five top contenders at the moment seem to be the favourites, based on a variety of sources:
"Munich", "Brokeback Mountain", "Walk the Line", "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Cinderella Man".
Other possibilities include "Syriana", "Good Night and Good Luck", "Capote", "Pride and Prejudice", "Mrs. Henderson Presents", "A History of Violence" and "Crash". All of these films have drawn rave reviews but with the conservative Oscar crowd will face challenges for a variety of reasons. Its also still too early to rule out dark horses like "The Producers" or "The New World".
