Several years ago "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" became a major sleeper hit, nabbing over $135 million worldwide at the box office by catering to a demographic so rarely offered anything of interest at the multiplex.
Now, most of the cast are back for the the follow-up to the story of a bunch of British retirees living in India. Tom Wilkinson is out this time following the events of the first film. Instead Richard Gere has joined the cast. Director John Madden insists that he hates the film being called a sequel:
"I've always insisted on 'companion piece.' I think 'sequel' smacks of, 'Hey, we made a good one, it worked, let's do another one.' It certainly isn't the same movie again. We were very aware of wanting the experience to be completely fresh. If somebody simply walked into this film knowing nothing about the first, they would be just fine."
