When AMC's zombie drama returns for its fifth season premiere, expect to be surprised by how dark it gets.
The show's producers talked up the six-minute opening sequence of the episode at Comic Con this week, saying it is brutal, intense, and that some of the shocks even the cast didn't expect. Cast member Andrew Lincoln says: "
"All of us were just dumbstruck and said, 'We're not going to be able to show this. We're not going to be able to show this'...We are showing it."
Showrunner Scott Gimple pitched the idea to executive producer Greg Nicotero who came up with a plan and setup the shoot... but without informing the cast of the details. Nicotero says:
"I remember when we were filming it, the other actors had no idea how I choreographed things. So when certain events occur during those first few minutes, everyone's reaction was ‘Holy s--t, did I just see what I think I just saw?'... I didn't want these guys to know what was coming up, and it worked really well."
We'll see what the fuss is about ourselves when the premiere goes to air in October.
