Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly had discussions and is currently in serious consideration if not outright talks for the role of Doctor Stephen Strange in Scott Derrickson's upcoming "Doctor Strange" film at Marvel Studios.
With Benedict Cumberbatch having revealed this week he had meetings for the role but couldn't do the role due to scheduling, talk has suddenly and quite heavily turned to Phoenix. In fact at least two trades claim actual negotiations are actively underway. Representatives for Marvel and Phoenix had no comment.
Tom Hardy, Jared Leto and Justin Theroux have also previously been mentioned as possibilities that ultimately didn't pan out. Whomever takes on the role will play the Marvel Comics hero - a former neurosurgeon who protects Earth from magical and mystical threats.
Phoenix had previously been courted for the role of Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" which ultimately didn't happen. Still, it shows Phoenix is certainly open to doing a comic book movie - something that pretty much all of his recent co-stars like Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Emma Stone have done.
