Showrunner John Logan and three of the hunky male cast from Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" all turned up for a panel yesterday at this year's San Diego Comic Con. The hot topic of discussion was the soon to head into production second season of the supernatural series.
Logan confirms that after the shadowy vampire villain of the first season, this year the drama will be dealing with a human antagonist in the form of Helen McCrory's Madame Kali who made brief appearances two episodes of the first season. Logan says "Her supernatural world becomes the threat to all the gentlemen sitting on the stage with me" referring to Reeve Carney's Dorian Gray, Harry Treadaway's Dr. Frankenstein and Josh Hartnett's Ethan Chandler.
Logan says the first season was about building the show's central family of characters, whereas next season is very different: "Having spent ten years building this world in my mind, I talk about the first three seasons of what the story is. What excites me about season two is … it gets much larger."
More of Ethan's backstory will be explored in the second season, and his father Jared will be introduced at some point: "He was a monstrous man who treated his son brutally. Something happened in Ethan's life that became this curse/blessing. But in the larger theology/cosmology, there's other elements to it, which we'll explore in season two."
Logan also revealed he hopes to introduce Dr. Moreau at some point on the series.
