On a recent visit to the set of the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel in Austin, TX, producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller talked to Now Playing Magazine about some of the other films the company is looking to remake.
They confirm that Platinum Dunes is currently developing a modern version of Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic "The Birds". But rather than being slavishly faithful to the original, their film will not attempt to improve upon the master. Instead, the script will be based on the short story which inspired Hitchcock's film.
"You're talking about someone that's been known as the best thriller director of all time," Forman says. "And we're talking about a man that's revered across the board. ... We're not remaking the Hitchcock movie. Not at all". Although the producers remain optimistic, the project hasn't progressed past the script stage and according to Fuller, a deal is "very far away".
In the meantime they're first plans are to redux "The Hitcher", an update of the 1986 thriller starring C. Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer about a young man who picks up a hitchhiker on a road trip and becomes the suspect in a series of murders. First-time director Dave Meyers is already set to direct, but there hasn't been any casting announced. Fuller and Form deny rumors that Sam Rockwell is attached, but the producers do say that the film will be bigger in scope and budget than their previous projects.
