That puts it well above the 82% (7.1/10) and 68/100 respectively that the film's predecessor, the 2011 reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," scored. It is also one of the best scoring wide releases of the year so far - hovering in the same territory as other very well regarded wide releases this year like "The LEGO Movie," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Captain America: the Winter Soldier".
While I liked 'Rise', most of the non-ape elements had some big issues regarding performances (aside from Lithgow) and several inconsistent script and directing choices - see my review here. It was one of those films I admired but didn't love.
With 'Dawn' though I have no such issues, it is not only thoroughly entertaining but consistent and polished throughout. It's an excellent film which will easily rank high in my best of the year list alongside films I've thoroughly enjoyed this year so far like "Starred Up," "Calvary," "The Raid 2," "Edge of Tomorrow," "Locke," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Under the Skin," "X-Men Days of Future Past," "Stranger by the Lake," "Snowpiercer," "In Fear" and "Frank".
Now is the time to have your say. Did it live up to your expectations? Do you prefer 'Rise' or was this a better film? How does it compare to the other films of the summer so far for you? Leave your comments below. As usual, SPOILERS ARE ALLOWED so those who haven't seen it yet should stay away.
