Zak Penn ("The Avengers," "The Incredible Hulk") has signed on to rewrite the video game-themed thriller "Ready Player One" for Warner Bros. Pictures. Donald De Line and Dan Farah are producing.
Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, the story centers on a young teen who escapes into an immersive online virtual world known as Oasis, described as a "social networking utopia that allows its users to lead their dream life."
Before the game's creator passes away, he sets up an elaborate treasure hunt where the winner will take control of his company. When Wade enters the contest, he finds himself competing against corporate forces who will stop at nothing to beat him to it.
Ernest Cline and Eric Eason previously did some work on the script. Penn has been brought in to get it into a shape that can be taken to directors this fall, with a number of high-profile filmmakers already expressing interest.
