Ava DuVernay's Martin Luther King Jr. film "Selma" has scored a Christmas Day limited release ahead of a wide opening on January 9th 2015. The announcement puts the film right in the path of awards season.
Oprah Winfrey is producing the film and today it has also been announced she'll play the small but key role of Annie Lee Cooper, an elderly woman and visible leader amongst the civil rights protesters in Selma who tried to register to vote and was unfairly denied by the sheriff.
David Oyelowo stars as the iconic civil rights leader in the film which tracks King’s struggle to secure voting rights for all people, culminating in the Alabama march.
The film is currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo, Andre Holland, Alessandro Nivola, Dylan Baker, Tim Roth, Jeremy Strong, Giovanni Ribisi, and Omar J. Dorsey also star.
