Sony Pictures Entertainment and SEGA Sammy Group division Marza Animation Planet are teaming to develop a hybrid CG-animated/live-action film (ala "The Smurfs," "Garfield") based on the "Sonic The Hedgehog" video game series.
The story will focus on the supersonic blue hedgehog's rivalry with various characters in the games, including his nemesis Dr. Eggman. The hope is to launch a potential franchise.
Sony Pictures production president Hannah Minghella says: "There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Upright Citizens Brigade alums Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are penning the script while Neal H. Moritz, Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi will produce.
The games have been around for two decades, selling over 140 million copies and generating $1 billion in revenues.
