The Disney Junior network has announced plans for "The Lion Guard," an animated series that will effectively serve as a follow-up to the animated classic and its subsequent direct-to-disc sequels.
First launching as a made-for-TV movie in November 2015 ahead of a full series on January 2016, the story follows a young cub named Kion, son of Simba and Nala.
Said cub leads an eclectic group of animals charged with preserving the Pride Lands including a fearless honey badger, a confident cheetah, a happy-go-lucky hippo and an intellectual egret.
Other characters include Kion's older sister Kiara, the future Queen of the Pride Lands, and original Lion King cast members like Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and Mufasa.
The series is essentially being pitched as "The Lion King meets The Avengers" and is being targeted for the very young - kids aged 2-7. Disney Consumer Products is already at work on the tie-in toys to launch with the series.
The announcement comes as the Honest Trailers guys have re-examined the original 1994 classic.
