So what's the real reason behind Warner Brothers pushing back Andy and Lana Wachowski's "Jupiter Ascending"? Officially it remains that the film needs more time for visual effects work.
Thompson on Hollywood today adds that another reason could well be that the studio doesn't want to gamble on two potential major losses in the same quarter.
Specifically, the studio was already concerned enough with the pre-release tracking numbers for the just released Tom Cruise-led "Edge of Tomorrow". It was too late to postpone that film, but the otherworldly sci-fi space epic 'Jupiter' could be moved to the first quarter.
It's a time with less expectation, less competition, and more breathing room for the publicity department. Should it prove a disappointment, the damage will be partly mitigated by being in another quarter.
