While Channing Tatum isn't officially onboard yet, his taking the role of the X-Men mutant Gambit is essentially a fait accompli at this point. Speaking with MTV recently, he says:
"Creatively, we're starting to chug forward. Obviously there's nothing [official]. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really."
Of course, all the reports so far have generally indicated that Tatum's Gambit will appear in the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" and possibly a standalone spin-off afterwards.
Tatum confirms at one point that they briefly talked about doing a standalone first, one that could "change the genre":
"We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie.' Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He's a thief. He walks on the gray. I'm hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones."
Fox previously locked down an untitled Marvel film project for July 18th 2018, could that be a potential home for a standalone "Gambit" should it go forward?
