Ahead of the premiere of the new trailer this morning, director James Gunn, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, and some of the cast of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" (Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, and Dave Bautista) participated in a Q&A on Facebook where they discussed the upcoming film.
Whilst most of the answers were kept fairly general and spoiler free, a couple of new tidbits were discovered during the chat such one of the biggest influences on the film being Magritte's Empire of Light paintings.
Gunn says his contract is built with an option to return and direct a sequel if he's asked back: "I believe I am contractually obliged to do that whether I want to or not. But, of course, I'd love it. I love these guys so much – the guys at Marvel and the cast. They've become very close friends."
This film will cover a lot of Star-Lord's origin and a little about the pasts of the other key characters. Quill's mixed cassette tape in the film serves as "the last reminder he has of his childhood on earth. The music is also a way to keep us grounded in this out of the world space epic. We have lots of cool songs – more will be revealed soon."
Will the Guardians and The Avengers ever meet up? "Well... not Avengers 2. We'll have to see." He does confirm there will be some easter eggs in the film related to "The Avengers" sequels.
Asked about characters he wanted to include but didn't have room for, he says: "Bug was actually in a couple drafts, but he wasn't utilized well enough. I'm a big Starhawk fan. But he isn't in this movie. That's why the future is so beautiful."
The film's runtime sits at around two hours, and Groot has the "most beautiful scene" in the film.
