Ridley Scott has begun negotiations to replace Drew Goddard as the director of "The Martian" at 20th Century Fox.
An adaptation of Andy Weir's e-book, the story follows an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars and must figure out how to survive long enough to return to Earth. Despite the setting, insiders say it's quite different from the tone of Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" and more along the lines of "Cast Away".
Goddard, who wrote the adapted screenplay, departed last month due to his commitments to Sony's "Sinister Six". At the same time Matt Damon came onboard "The Martian" to star and Damon is still attached.
Scott, Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood will produce but there's no word on a production schedule as yet.
