In a surprise decision, CBS has decided to renew its long-running but on the bubble crime procedural "The Mentalist". Showrunner Bruno Heller will now serve double-duty on both it and FOX's "Gotham".
That's the good news out of the the way. The bad news? The network has also finalised its list of cancellations with many of last season's new shows getting the chop.
On the drama side "Intelligence" and "Hostages" have both been axed. On the comedy side, "The Crazy Ones" and mid-season comedies "Bad Teacher" and "Friends with Better Lives" are all gone.
The network has also ordered seven new shows to join its line-up, most notably the latest spin-off "NCIS: New Orleans" with Scott Bakula and CCH Pounder. There's also the remake of "The Odd Couple," the sports-themed family comedy "McCarthy's, the high-profile buddy detective drama "Battle Creek" starring Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters, the Tea Leoni-led "Madam Secretary," the Maggie Q-led psychological thriller "Stalker", and the Robert Patrick-led super geniuses drama "Scorpion".
