Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" finally opened in the United States last night with an estimated $8.7 million Thursday night preview haul.
The first installment opened to a $62 million weekend in 2012 ahead of a $262 million total. Estimates for this one peg its opening weekend to be around $85 million.
To compare Spidey's Thursday night previews with other recent Marvel fare - "Thor: The Dark World" scored $7.1M ahead of a $85M weekend, while "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" pulled in $10.2M ahead of a $95M weekend.
The studio is reportedly waiting to see Saturday numbers to see if a attendance bump from families might push the overall estimate up. Internationally the film has already pulled in a total of $155 million.
