Focus Features has acquired US distribution rights to "London Has Fallen," the upcoming sequel to FilmDistrict's 2013 action-thriller "Olympus Has Fallen".
Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Radha Mitchell return for the film which will score a nationwide release on October 2nd 2015.
The story begins in London where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for the most powerful leaders of the Western world.
What starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill said leaders and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people can stop it - the U.S. President (Eckhart), his formidable secret service head (Butler), and an untrusting English MI-6 agent (still to be cast).
Antoine Fuqua's $70 million-budget original grossed $160 million worldwide, most of that domestically. That proved better than its more high-profile competitor "White House Down" which scored $205 million at the box-office, but cost $150 million to make.
Reviews for 'Olympus' were mixed (at best), though the film has managed to score a cult following thanks to its serious tone and strong focus on action rather than effects.
