Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is in negotiations to direct a biopic about iconic singer Elvis Presley for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Warners has secured rights to all musical components in Presley's catalog for this project which will not be based on any pre-existing material. Kelly Marcel ("Fifty Shades of Grey," "Saving Mr. Banks") is writing the film and it's presently unclear which periods of Presley's life will be focused on.
Gail Berman is producing. It's expected Luhrmann's wife Catherine Martin will board as costume designer and potentially production designer as well.
Luhrmann is also developing the "Kung Fu" movie at Legendary and it's uncertain which will be his immediate next project following last year's "The Great Gatsby".
