Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" opened in fourteen markets this weekend - including U.K., Spain, Germany, Belgium, Mexico and Australia - and has raked in $47 million thus far. In those territories, with the Easter holiday weekend and school holidays helping numbers, it's the biggest opening of the year.
The opening is on par with the first 'Amazing' and well above the recent "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" which itself passed the half billion mark at the global box-office this weekend. "Rio 2" is also soaring and passed $400 million worldwide this weekend.
Meanwhile Disney's "Frozen" has now surpassed "Ice Age: Continental Drift" in overseas markets to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time in international markets with $729.3 million. Add to that is its domestic total which is expected to cross $400 million next weekend.
