"Winter Soldier" Scores $10M In Previews

Disney and Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" opened last night at 8pm in the United States and is headed towards the biggest domestic box-office opening of the year so far.

The first film opened to $65 million in 2011, whilst the new one is on track to easily beat the current record holder for the month of April - "Fast Five" in 2011 which had a $86.1 million opening weekend. Indeed, 'Winter Soldier' opened last night to an estimated $10.2 million from Thursday night previews.

That's ahead of November's "Thor: The Dark World" which made $7.1 million in Thursday night previews ahead of a $85.7 million opening weekend. It's also ahead of "Man of Steel" which scored $9 million in Thursday night previews ahead of a $116 million opening weekend.

But it's behind both "Iron Man 3" ($15.6M previews) and "The Avengers" ($18.7M). Even so, this sequel looks like it could nearly double the opening of its predecessor.

'Winter Soldier' also bowed in international markets last week and has closed out its first week with a $95 million overseas haul.
