Thousands Protest Tiger Lily Casting

Nearly eight thousand people have signed a petition protesting the casting of Rooney Mara in the role of Tiger Lily in Joe Wright's upcoming "Peter Pan" prequel film "Pan" at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The complaint by the Care2 organization is over the apparent 'racial whitewashing' of the Native American princess character. The petition says: "The casting choice is particularly shameful for a children's movie, telling children their role models must all be white is unacceptable."

It has previously been stated that the production plans to boast a multi-racial/international cast that would challenge previous conceptions of the various characters. So far the four major roles announced - Blackbeard, Captain Hook, young Peter Pan and Tiger Lily, are all Caucasian. Indeed, Mara beat out both an Oscar-winning black actress and an acclaimed French actress for the part.

The petition goes on to say: "It stars Mara and two white guys - Hugh Jackman and Garrett Hedlund. Not so multi-racial after all. Tell Warner Bros to stop casting white actors to play characters originally written as people of color!"
