NBC's "Constantine" Will Get To Smoke?

Fans have been wondering how faithful "Constantine," NBC's planned TV series adaptation of the Hellblazer comics, will be to the comics. While the action has shifted to the United States, the character remains a Brit and is being played by one - Welshman Matt Ryan.

Of course one of the signature habits of the character of John Constantine is his chain smoking, something considered a massive no-no on network television these days. In an interview with I Am Rogue, executive producer David S. Goyer says they're fighting to keep that in now:

"That's a tricky one on network TV. We're negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the [2005] film did. Even though the film was interesting."

Goyer calls it an effects-heavy show, confirms the character will sport blond hair, and says there are only four series regulars in the show. Also, if a full season order goes ahead, occult figures from the DC universe such as Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Nergal, Rosacarnis, and Swamp Thing could show up.
