Breck Eisner ("Sahara", "Taken") is set to helm Universal's remake of "Creature From the Black Lagoon" reports Variety.

Gary Ross has penned the current draft, a present-day update of the 1954 monster classic. Ross's father, Arthur A. Ross, wrote the screenplay for the original.

"As a kid, I remember loving Jack Arnold's original version of this film. What I really want to do is update an iconic image from the '50s and bring in more of the sci-fi sensibility of 'Alien' or John Carpenter's 'The Thing'" says Ross.

The original introduced an amphibious monster who terrorized archaeologists exploring in the Amazon. Plans for the update call for shooting in the US as well as a Central or South American location.
