A Quick 88 Minutes Report

By Garth Franklin Thursday October 20th 2005 11:50PM

Al Pacino is up in Canada shooting "88 Minutes" at the moment. In the thriller, he plays a college professor who, while moonlighting as a forensic psychiatrist for the FBI, receives a death threat telling him that he has only 88 minutes to live. In narrowing down possible suspects, he frantically seeks to communicate with a problem student, an ex-girlfriend, and a serial killer on death row. 'Gavin' was on hand to drop in this eyewitness report from all the action:

"Much of the filming is being done at University of British Columbia (UBC), in Vancouver (B.C., Canada). Film crews had set up and started filming since Oct 15th. There's a large faux-brick sign that says "University of Northwestern Washington" lying about, along with many other props -- mostly signs to cover up the current UBC logos.

On Oct 15-16, they were filming at UBC's Life Sciences building, but nobody could see anything, as security was ridiculously tight. On the 17th was the big day for extras, as they were using the frount of our Koerner Library for a scene, consisting of several men in white lab coats and carrying briefcases walking towards the building. The Library's sign was covered up with a new sign saying "Health Sciences Building". Hundreds of extras were needed as busy students walking in and out of the building, or walking past the camera. There was some huge confusion for awhile, as some students thought the library was closed, which ended up with crowds of people on the sides, ruining the shot. Film crews had to reorganize, and let all students know to just naturally walk to where ever they need to go.

On Oct 18th, film crews moved to UBC's Buchanan buildings, where there were several scenes requiring many prop Police and Firetruck vehicles, all with Washington license plates, and "Seattle Police" and such on the sides. It was this scene where everyone got to see Al Pacino up close, because they were filming during the busy late morning and students had to walk through the set. To my surprise, security was not as tight as the weekend, and some people were lucky enough to get Pacino's signature."

Thanks again to 'Gavin'
