Welsh actor Matt Ryan ("Criminal Minds") is nearing a deal to star in the lead role in NBC's "Constantine," a series adaptation of the DC Comics title "Hellblazer".
Ryan would play the blond, working-class British occult detective John Constantine, a man who "struggles with his faith as he is haunted by the sins of his past and is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness."
In the series Liv, the daughter of a late friend, is targeted by demons. Constantine steps in to save her and the two form an alliance.
Daniel Cerone ("Dexter") will pen the script, David Goyer ("Da Vinci's Demons") is attached to executive produce and Neill Marshall ("Game of Thrones") will direct the pilot.
Though best known for "Criminal Minds," Ryan has also had key roles in Showtime's "The Tudors," and films like "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" and "Flypaper". He recently voiced the lead character of Edward Kenway in the video game "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag".
