Just ahead of its launch in Japan this weekend, Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that the PlayStation 4 has cumulatively sold through more than 5.3 million units around the world as of February 8th 2014.
PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States, and Sony claim that January global sales for the PS4 were nearly double that of rival Xbox One.
Microsoft's last officially announced sales figures for the Xbox One were 3 million as of the end of December last year (PS4 was 4.2 million at the time). If these estimates are correct, that would put the Xbox One at around 3.6 million units sold thus far.
Both the upcoming Japanese launch of the PS4, and the release of much anticipated titles like "Titanfall" and "Infamous: Second Son" are expected to boost sales for both consoles in coming weeks. Sony have also released a new trailer for the upcoming PS4-exclusive "The Order: 1886" which you can see below.
