Rovio Entertainment has selected the Vancouver-based Sony Pictures Imageworks ("Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," "Hotel Transylvania") as the animators for the movie based on its immensely popular "Angry Birds" video game franchise.
Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed says: "It was very important for Rovio to find the perfect partner – in style, talent and location – to bring the Angry Birds movie to life, and Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver made that decision easy."
John Cohen and Catherine Winder are set to produce the film, and the choice of Vancouver was helped by generous tax credits and local subsidies to bring the production to the Canadian city.
British Columbia premier Christy Clark says: "Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon, and its creators want its movie adaptation done right. And to do it right, Rovio and Sony Pictures Imageworks have shown their faith in Vancouver – and that will lead to more opportunities and more jobs."
Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis helm the project from a script by Jon Vitti. A July 1st 2016 release is being targeted.
