Marvel has staked aside May 2016 and May 2017 for two upcoming sequels. Up until now it was thought that "Thor 3" and "Captain America 3" would likely take those slots, but today JoBlo says the first one could be something else - "Guardians of the Galaxy 2".
Marvel has set aside two release slots each year starting this year - the April/May slot going to a tested property while the second half of the year slot goes to a newcomer. This year's it's "Captain America 2" and the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," next year it's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man".
Marvel apparently has enough faith in the still untested property that they may have already discussed a sequel to debut during one of the most competitive release slots in the genre to date.
Were it to open in May 6th 2016 as suggested, it would come into direct competition with Warners' "Batman Vs. Superman" scheduled to open the same day along with Fox's "X-Men: Apocalypse" scheduled for three weeks later on May 27th.
If true, the question then becomes - who will flinch first? The report also confirms rumors that a "Guardians of the Galaxy" animated series is in the works to air on Disney XD. It would arrive Fall 2015.
