Kristin Scott Thomas, one of film's most acclaimed and prolific actresses, says that she's essentially retiring from screen acting after three decades and sixty five films.

In a lengthy interview with The Guardian, the 53-year-old actress says this decision came about suddenly in September: "I just suddenly thought, I cannot cope with another film. I realised I've done the things I know how to do so many times in different languages, and I just suddenly thought, I can't do it any more. I'm bored by it. So I'm stopping."

She goes on to say: "The kinds of films that I do are usually quite rapidly put together, and it always seems to be a little bit of a shambles. I like filming, but what I don't like is having to rearrange things and rewrite scenes. I just can't be bothered. I'm often asked to do something because I'm going to be a sort of weight to their otherwise flimsy production. They need me for production purposes, basically. So they give me a little role in something where they know I'm going to be able to turn up, know what to do, cry in the right place. I shouldn't bite the hand that feeds, but I keep doing these things for other people, and last year I just decided life's too short. I don't want to do it any more."

Her decision is only for screen roles, Thomas still intends to work on the stage. She admits she's open to return to filmmaking but only on projects she "absolutely can't resist". Thomas has several films already in the can due out in the next year or so.

Thomas' notable screen performances have included "The English Patient," "I've Loved You So Long," "Gosford Park," "Tell No One," "Only God Forgives," "The Invisible Woman," "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Richard III," "Nowhere Boy," "Love Crime," "Mission: Impossible," "The Horse Whisperer," "Life as a House," "Random Hearts," "Angels and Insects," "The Other Boleyn Girl," "Bitter Moon," "The Woman in the Fifth," "Sarah's Key," "Easy Virtue," "Bel Ami," "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" and "A Handful of Dust".
