Baz Luhrmann Plans Hip Hop TV Drama

Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is teaming with "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan and playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis to produce a hip-hop period drama series.

The coming-of-age story explores the dawn of the hip-hop era as seen through the eyes of five young New Yorkers, specifically two best friends: a talented writer and a natural performer.

The first season will be set in 1977 as disco is peaking. The city is in the midst of high crime rates and a financial crisis, while in the South Bronx a marginalized subculture amongst black and Latino youth saw the start of what would become a global music phenomenon that rose to prominence in the 1980s, and was a major force throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

The series will have heavy musical elements and performances, but is NOT a musical (no characters randomly breaking into song).

Executives at VOD and cable channels have all heard the project pitch this week. Interest is said to be high, and a deal for production of a pilot (or maybe even a series) seems likely.
