The death yesterday of one of the greatest peacemakers the world has ever seen, Nelson Mandela, took on an extra sad twist yesterday.
Mandela's daughters Zindzi and Zenani were attending the London premiere of the biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" last night, along with various cast, crew, and VIPs such as Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge.
Mandela died at 8.50pm local Johannesburg time, ten minutes before the screening of the film began. The daughters had just finished meeting the cast and crew when they received the phone call about their father's passing.
They insisted to producers that the film shouldn't be interrupted and guests should watch the film as planned. They didn't attend the screening and returned to their hotel.
It wasn't until the movie was over and the credits were rolling that producer Anant Singh and star Idris Elba came up onto the stage to announce Mandela's passing - the first time almost all the audience had heard the news.
Elba later issued a statement: "What an honor it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I am stunned at this very moment, in mourning with the rest of the world and Madiba's family. We have lost one of the greatest human beings to have walked this earth, I only feel honoured to be associated with him. He is in a better place now."
