Universal Breaks Its Box-Office Record

Disney beat their previous milestone the other week, now Universal Pictures has broken its record for the highest-grossing year at the North American box office. With more than a month to go in the year, Universal has now made $1.352 billion domestically, breaking the previous record of $1.335 billion in 2012.

The win is mainly due to two massive hits - "Fast and Furious 6" with $238.7 million domestic, and "Despicable Me 2" with $365.9 million. Added to that were several healthy smaller performers like "Identity Thief" ($134.5 million), "Oblivion" ($89.1 million), "The Purge" ($64.5 million), "2 Guns" ($75.6 million), "Mama" ($71.6 million) and "Riddick" ($42 million).

Universal already broke its international record back in August and now sits at a worldwide total of $3.49 billion for 2013 so far. The studio still has "47 Ronin" and "Lone Survivor" to open this year.
