Cross Creek and Walden Media have hopped onboard to produce and finance the $65 million "Everest" feature at Working Title and Universal Pictures.
Emmett/Furla Films dropped out of the project several weeks ago, leading to the rush to find new financiers. Baltasar Kormakur ("Contraband," "The Deep") is directing this tale based on the disastrous 1996 attempt to scale the world's tallest mountain.
Three different expeditions were hit by a sudden blinding storm, resulting in the deaths of eight climbers. Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes star.
Shooting starts January 13th in Italy, Nepal and Iceland. The project is one of three Everest-themed films in the works, the others being a Doug Liman-directed film for Working Title, and a ten-part event series on Fox.
