While a sequel to James Wan's supernatural sleeper hit "The Conjuring" is already in the works, New Line Cinema is said to be concurrently developing a spin-off project.
This film would focus on Annabelle, the scene-stealing haunted doll which resides in a locked away collection of possessed artifacts owned by paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga).
Separate to the main storyline of the first film, the doll is a key part of that film's prologue and comes into play briefly in the second half.
No details are available on what the spin-off would entail, though a prequel about its origin seems the most likely idea. John R. Leonetti, who served as cinematographer on "The Conjuring," has signed on to direct.
Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes, who penned the first film, are penning the sequel and so aren't involved in the spin-off. Filming is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2014.
