Having done a documentary on the rise and fall of Napster, former "Bill and Ted" star Alex Winter is turning his sights towards a similar doco about the virtual currency BitCoin. The plan is for a Kickstarter campain to fund the project entitled "Deep Web: The Untold Story Of Bitcoin And Silk Road".
Introduced in 2008, BitCoin is a distributed, peer-to-peer digital currency that functions without the intermediation of any central authority. Because of its decentralized, unregulated and carefully encrypted approach to transactions, along with its very low transaction fees, it has become popular form of currency on the digital black market.
One such site to utilise it extensively was Silk Road, which was nicknamed the "Amazon.com of illegal drugs". Launched in 2011, drugs such as LSD, tar heroin, ecstasy and Afghani hash were as easy to order for delivery as a DVD. The FBI managed to shut down the site last month and arrest its founder Ross William Ubricht.
Winter's documentary will include all of this. He, Marc Schiller and Glen Zipper will produce the film and are allowing people to contribute towards it using Bitcoin. In a statement they say:
"The true story of Bitcoin has all the twists and turns of a cyberpunk thriller. Through Bitcoin we will enter the secret world of Silk Road as we follow a group of computer hackers creating a ‘dark web,' which has led to the rise of a new class of cyber drug lords that's currently playing out in headlines around the world."
