Having had a successful run of producing their own original series programming, Netflix is now looking into producing original movies.
In a quarterly conference call, Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos confirmed the company is actively looking at documentaries as the first films to produce, but he plans to "keep my mind wide open to what those films would be and what they would look like."
From there, narrative features could be next. Don't expect this to take away from their original series programming though as Sarandos says they plan to double their spend on original series content over the coming year.
He adds that even with the extra spending, the amount Netflix puts towards original content is less than 10% of overall global content spending. Compare that with the 40% that HBO sinks into its originals.
