By Garth Franklin Thursday October 10th 2013 04:04PM

Those who thought Fox's delay of next year's sci-fi action thriller "The Maze Runner" by seven months meant a lack of confidence in the property - think again.

Fox has exercised its option to buy "The Scorch Trials," the second book in James Dashner's four-novel series that began with "The Maze Runner".

T.S. Nowlin has been hired to adapt 'Scorch' under the supervision of 'Maze' director Wes Ball. Nowlin adapted the first book alongside Noah Oppenheim and Grant Myers.

Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Aml Ameen star in 'Maze'

In 'Maze,' "Teen Wolf" breakout star Dylan O'Brien plays a young man named Thomas who awakens with no memory of who he is. He finds that he and a community of boys have been deposited inside an enormous maze as part of a mysterious test.

In 'Scorch,' the young men have escaped the maze but face an even more treacherous challenge on the open roads of a devastated planet.

"The Maze Runner" is slated to hit cinemas on September 19th 2014.
