We've had action heroes of both genders and many races and ethnicities. Yet, one thing that hasn't really been done is an action movie with a gay male protagonist.
Lee Daniels, riding high off the critical and commercial success of "Lee Daniels' The Butler," plans to change that. Daniels tells Out.com that he's set "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer to play "one-half of a gay interracial action hero couple" for a film Daniels has in development.
Daniels calls it a "gay 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith,' but the two good-looking guys are the action heroes." There's a twist though - "we don't find out they're gay until the end of the movie."
Asked about casting, Daniels says: "Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He's so hot, isn't he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that's so…I love him to death."
The likely issue will be financing: "I don't think I'm going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for The Butler. I'm in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about."
