"Blue Valentine" and "The Place Beyond the Pines" director Derek Cianfrance is slated to helm a film at Focus Features about the gestation of the sporting cable network ESPN.

"The Social Network" producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are teaming with Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell on the project which will use James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales' 2011 book "ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun".

The book is an oral history that chronicles the formation of the cable network and its rise to power. A writer is currently being sought.

Focus picked up the rights to the book after Fox put the movie into turnaround a few months ago.
