Joel Edgerton ("The Great Gatsby," "Zero Dark Thirty") is in talks to star in the film adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' novel "Shantaram" at Warner Bros. Pictures, Inifinitum Nihil and GK Films.
Edgerton would play an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and eventually uses gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.
Having struggled in development over the past decade, Johnny Depp was previously attached to star years ago. He remains onboard as producer and has personally courted Edgerton to star in the film.
Eric Roth is adapting the script, while Christi Dembrowski and Graham King will produce. A new director is currently being sought.
