"50 Shades" Casting Backlash Begins

By Garth Franklin Tuesday September 3rd 2013 03:18PM

The announcement yesterday of Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam as the lead stars of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film adaptation has led to quite a few fans of the novel being vocally upset about the choices.

A petition over at Change.org has already received over 8,300 supporters in its quest to get the lead roles changed so that Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel will play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

Co-producer Dana Brunetti has already responded to some of the backlash, saying "there is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc. So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”

The petition follows a similar one launched a few weeks ago demanding Ben Affleck be replaced as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel.
