"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Side Effects" actress Rooney Mara is set to replace Mia Wasikowska in Todd Haynes' 1950s lesbian drama "Carol" at The Weinstein Company, Number 9 Films and Film4.

Cate Blanchett remains attached to this adaptation of "Talented Mr. Ripley" author Patricia Highsmith's story "The Price of Salt" which Phyllis Nagy has penned.

The story details the complex relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. One is a twenty-something girl (Mara) working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, the other is a wife (Blanchett) trapped in a loveless marriage.

Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley and Christine Vachon will produce. Shooting begins in the Spring.
