Trade Breaks: Truth, Reaping, Saw 2

"ThinkFilm said Friday that it plans to appeal the NC-17 that the MPAA Classification and Ratings Administration has awarded Atom Egoyan's "Where the Truth Lies" even though the group hasn't officially published the movie's rating yet. Based on a murder mystery by Rupert Holmes, "Truth" concerns an investigation into an unsolved murder that marred the career of a '50s stand-up comedy team (Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth). "David Morrissey ("Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction") and Idris Elba ("The Wire") are joining Hilary Swank in "The Reaping" for Warner Bros. Pictures. The story centers on a university professor (Swank) who debunks miracles. She is summoned to a small Louisiana town by a man (Morrissey) to investigate a series of bizarre occurrences that appear to be the 10 biblical plagues. "The MPAA has turned thumbs down on advertising materials featuring severed fingers that Lions Gate Films had distributed to Web sites to promote its upcoming horror film "Saw II." The MPAA said its Advertising Administration, which reviews all advertising and publicity materials submitted by producers and distributors for a film rating, had not approved the material. If it had, it would have found that "materials for the film 'Saw II' (that) display dismembered fingers ... is unacceptable under Advertising Administration standards"..." (full details)
