"Elysium" studio Sony Pictures and financier MRC are re-teaming for the next effort of that film's director Neill Blomkamp.
The pair will co-produce and co-finance "Chappie," the story of a robot with artificial intelligence that is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.
Rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser will play the hoods, while Sharlto Copley stars as the voice of Chappie. "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel is also in talks for a role in the film.
Blomkamp helms from a script he co-wrote with Terri Tatchell. He will also produce alongside Simon Kinberg. Filming begins in the fall.
