"Fruitvale Station" director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan are teaming with Sylvester Stallone for what's being labelled a spin-off of the "Rocky" franchise at MGM.
Coogler and Aaron Covington are penning the script for "Creed" which stars Jordan as the grandson of Carl Weathers' Apollo Creed character.
In the script, Apollo's grandson has no desire to box and yet possesses the gifts and potential of his grandfather. He needs a mentor and seeks out retired fighter Rocky Balboa who isn't eager to return to the boxing world, even as a trainer. Stallone will reprise his role in this.
The project itself is reportedly Coogler's idea in the first place. This will be his next film following "Fruitvale Station" and it is expected to move forward quickly.
Stallone, Kevin King, Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff will produce.
