Universal's Big Success With "Fast 6," "Purge"

Everyone over at Universal Pictures has plenty of good reasons to celebrate this week.

Yesterday came word that their summer tentpole "Fast and Furious 6" had become the fastest film in the studio's history to pass the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

The sixth 'Fast' has taken in $180.3 million in North America, and $342.2 million internationally so far.

Meanwhile, the studio's high-concept house-bound thriller "The Purge" opens wide today and is already yielding great results for the distributor.

Made for a mere $3 million, 'Purge' has already earned its production budget back with $3.4 million in box-office sales from midnight previews last night.

In fact, the film is looking towards a potential low-$20 million opening - that's ahead of the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn comedy "The Internship" which is only expected to open around $15 million, but cost nearly twenty times as much to produce.
