Mark Amin's Sobini Films has filed a lawsuit against Sony Pictures Entertainment, alleging the company is trying to block a futuristic Zorro movie by wrongly claiming exclusive rights to the Zorro character reports Variety.
Sobini Films, owns the rights to "The Curse of Capistrano," a 1919 serial novel that first introduced the caped and masked Zorro character according to the suit filed Monday. Sobini is ready to start production on "Zorro 2110" but can't get necessary insurance since Sony issued a cease-and-desist letter, according to the lawsuit.
Sony Pictures Entertainment which made 1998 movie "The Mask of Zorro" and have sequel "The Legend of Zorro'"set for release later this year, acquired the rights to later Zorro stories but never to the original book, according to the complaint.
