America's most famous film critic, probably the most famed film critic in the world over the past few decades, has died. Roger Ebert lost his battle with cancer earlier today at the age of 70.

The news comes just two days after Ebert posted a blog entry retiring from his regular duties as film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. Despite that, Ebert had big plans for the future.

A film critic since 1967, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism back in 1975.

Ebert became a household name through his film review TV series with the late Gene Siskel which ran from 1986 to 1999, and then the same series with Richard Roeper opposite Ebert from 1999 to 2006 until Ebert underwent an emergency operation in 2006. Guests hosts took over until the show's end in 2010.

Even after his diagnosis, and becoming unable to speak in 2006, Ebert penned some of the best work of his career online and became a popular poster on Twitter.
