Joel Silver's Silver Pictures and StudioCanal are teaming for the latest attempt at a reboot of John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi classic "Escape From New York".
Kurt Russell starred in the original as the eye patch-wearing antihero Snake Plissken. Set in a near future totalitarian United States where Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison, Plissken has one day to rescue the U.S. President who is being held hostage there.
New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures had been planning a remake for a while with the likes of Len Wiseman and Breck Eisner attached to direct at different points. Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy were also previously linked to play Plissken in the earlier versions. The studios gave up though, letting their option to the property lapse two years ago.
Producers Silver and Andrew Rona have ambitious plans, a completely new and fresh take that they hope will be a trilogy starting with this 'origin story'.
